Sylvia Celia Jacobs (nee Stockhamer) died October 8, 2011, on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year. She was born near Vienna in 1918. When she was four years old, Sylvia and her family immigrated to New York City, where she grew-up and lived for the first few years of her marriage. Sylvia embodied the best of her European heritage; she lived her life with refinement, grace and wit. Her genuine warmth and ability to connect with people were qualities which made her so loved. Sylvia had a lifetime romance with her husband, Syd. They knew each other for seventy- two years and were married three months shy of seventy years. Their son was born in New York City and their daughter was born in New Orleans, where they moved in the mid-forties. In 1947, Syd took a position as Vice-President of the Jewish Federation which brought the family to St. Louis. Syd died in April 2007. The family has had deep roots in St. Louis, although Sylvia always considered New York City her home. Though very much a person in her own right, Sylvia was the wind beneath Syd’s sails. She supported Syd in all of his community and civic endeavors and together they traveled the world. Before starting their family, Sylvia worked as a Pre-School Teacher. Later in St. Louis she worked as a Real Estate Agent and then consulted on programming and design projects for Investors Associates. Her volunteer work included Planned Parenthood and the American Heart Association. Since 1954, Sylvia and Syd have been members of Shaare Emeth Temple. Additionally, Sylvia was a Lifetime Member of Brandeis University National Women’s Committee, and a Life Member of Hadassah as well as The National Council of Jewish Women. Sylvia is survived by her son, Richard Jacobs and her daughter, Diane Kopp (Jerry). She has three adoring grandchildren- Rob and Danny Jacobs and Sasha Kopp as well as two step-grandchildren- Gary Kopp (Susie) and Susan Townsley (Bill). Her four step great-grandchildren are Adam and Annie Kopp and Charlie and Arlo Townsley. She left us a lasting legacy. We will deeply miss her. She will remain in our hearts forever.
