Sharon Baizer Winstein

Sharon Baizer Winstein, July 15, 2017

The Olivette resident died peacefully Saturday after five years of Alzheimer’s. Born in 1930 in Lincoln, Neb., Sharon taught over 10,000 children and adults how to cook traditional Jewish food at Shaare Emeth Religious School and other events, for 35 years. From matzo to hamentaschen, challah to strudel, she imbued her students with the spirit of Jewish cooking. Her work can still be accessed in her cookbook, Breads, Soups, and Salads, which has brought Jewish cuisine to the lives of countless others she never had the chance to teach personally.

Sharon is also well-known for teaching water exercises for back and neck health at the John Burroughs and Clayton swimming pools for 35 years. She developed her special series of exercises to aid her own recovery from experimental back surgery in 1970.

She was also very active in Toastmasters. The contributions she made to the people in her community will never be forgotten.

Sharon is survived by her children Sunni Winstein-Mace (the late Tim Mace), Merryl Winstein (Richard E. Hibbs), and Mark Winstein (Jyotsna Sreenivasan), and her grandchildren: Edward Mace and Rachel Mace-Crum (Cody Crum); Sarah, Joseph, and David Winstein-Hibbs; and Vilas and Karun Winstein.

Sharon was preceded in death by her husband Carl Israel Winstein, her parents Sol and Edythe Baizer, and her brother Richard Baizer.

Memorial service is at 9 a.m., Sunday August 6, 2017, in the Kehillah room at Congregation Shaare Emeth, 11645 Ladue Road, 63141. Enter from Ballas; Ladue Road is blocked by construction at Ballas Road.

Sharon donated her body to the Washington University Medical School, following in the footsteps of her parents. Memorial contributions preferred to the Alzheimer’s Association or Shaare Emeth Religious School.
