Phyllis Ruth Goodfriend (nee Papier) passed away peacefully in St. Louis, MO, on January 12, 2025. She leaves behind her beloved husband of 72 years, Herb; her sons Howard (Helen Anderson) and Bill (Peggy); her sister, Marcia Stolberg; and her grandchildren: Hilary (Allan Barrera), Sophia, and Leo.
Phyllis was born in New York City on May 18, 1934, to Harry and Minnie Papier. A proud native of the Bronx, she attended Bronx High School of Science and received her B.A. from Hunter College, graduating with Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa honors.
Phyllis was a lifelong teacher, and a lifelong learner. Early in her career, she taught Shabbat School on Long Island, and elementary school in the NYC schools. After the family moved to Great Neck, Phyllis taught as a reading specialist in the Roslyn School district. Phyllis earned her PhD from Hofstra in Reading Education, and went on to teach educators to help students overcome reading disabilities, while continuing to assist young readers in Roslyn schools.
No challenge went unanswered. Phyllis became an avid tennis player, then a Master Bridge player. Upon retiring from teaching, Phyllis became an award-winning photographer, serving as president of the Nassau County Camera Club. She was a longtime docent at the Nassau County (NY) Museum of Art, where she led groups and gave talks on numerous exhibitions.
Family and friends knew Phyllis had an indomitable spirit. She was proud of her value and the intrinsic worth of others, and stood up for those principles. You did not take an uncontested shot while she stood watch!
A 52 year resident of Great Neck, Phyllis explored cultures and sights near and far. She and Herb were well traveled. Among their destinations: Europe, Africa, Australia and every corner of the U.S. Her most treasured jaunts were to see her children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
