Gerda Awin Berger, died October 5, 2010 in St. Louis, Mo. Born February 16, 1930 in Vienna, Austria; daughter of Ignatz and Helene Awin; mother of Barbara Ameis, Richard Berger, Helen Berger and Ronald Berger; mother-in-law of Jack Ameis and David Benson; sister of Leo (Ilse) Awin and their children, Helene Willett and Eric Awin; cousin of Mary Steinhauser; grandmother of Amy Ameis, Amanda Ameis, Jessica Berger, Kassandra Berger, Ryan Berger, Andrew Berger. She was a strong woman, a Holocaust survivor, who gave a lifetime of good and hard work, love and service to her friends, family and community. Her father served in the Austrian army and her mother was an educator and activist. In 1939, her family escaped Nazi persecution to Shanghai, China where her mother operated a soup kitchen for Jewish refugees. After the Maoist revolution in China, her family moved to the U.S. and Canada in 1947. For relatively short periods, she lived in San Francisco, Pittsburgh and New York. Anna Gruber, died October 10, 2010. Sharon Helene Subow, died October 3, 2010 at age 68. Sister of the late Jules Subow, Paula Subow (Barry) Weinshenker and their children; daughter of Leon Subow, Mollye Cohen and George Cohen. Subow earned a bachelor’s degree in deaf education at Fontbonne College and a master’s degree from Webster University. She spent 32 years teaching deaf, hard-of-hearing and language impaired special education students at all levels of the St. Louis County system. After retirement, she devoted considerable resources to community involvement. Her fondest memory of this time was her volunteer work with seniors through CORP. Subow was active in protecting animals, “adopting” several dogs who had been mistreated or no longer wanted by their owners and helping to find good homes for many others. She served as a focal point in the efforts to save Shih Tzu’s. She will be sorely missed by her family, many friends and the community she served. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to St. Luke’s Hospice and the staff and nurses of Surrey Place for their skilled and compassionate care. Contributions to the Jules H.
