Norman Flax

Norman Flax, 90, passed away peacefully at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico on February 21, 2021. He leaves behind his wife, Suzanne Breslauer; children, Cheryl (and Ron) Flax-Davidson of Santa Fe, New Mexico and Marty (and Suzanne) Flax of Newton, Massachusetts; grandchildren, Skylar, Devorah, Jacob and Felix; great-grandchildren Rory and Keira, sisters Reva Baker and Frances Garellek of Montreal, Canada and stepchildren in New Mexico, Colorado and Missouri. He was predeceased by his wife Roz Flax.
Norm was born in Montreal, Canada. He started his social work career at the Jewish Community Centers in Detroit, Michigan and in St. Louis, Missouri. He later became a Professor of Social Work at the University of Missouri, St. Louis where he started the undergraduate social work program and became an inspiring mentor and professor to many.
Throughout his years in St. Louis and Santa Fe, Norm was passionate in his support of various organizations. These included being a Board Member for the National Association of Social Workers in Missouri, Missourians Against Handgun Violence, and the Missouri Gerontology Association. Norm brought his life-long desire to help others with him to Santa Fe. He was a volunteer for Kitchen Angels of Santa Fe; a Board member for Children First; a Board member for the Santa Fe Youth Shelter; a committee member for the Nosh ‘n Noggins program for senior citizens at Temple Beth Shalom; and a mentor with Envision Santa Fe, a program offering support and mentoring for struggling youth and families. He will be sorely missed by his family and his many friends and colleagues, with whom he stayed in contact throughout his life.
