Mildred Weiner Poletsky, died May 13, 2016.
Beloved wife of the late Richard Poletsky (Professional Engineer) for 46 years; dear mother of Sheila (Eric) Glazer and Rhonda (David) Banford; loving grandmother of Craig Varusa, Alyssa and Caitlin Banford; beloved sister of the late Lillian (Dr. Harry) Glassman; dear aunt, cousin and friend.
Mildred received an AA from Harris Junior College and a BA and BS from Washington University. She taught kindergarten at Central Elementary School in Wellston and also gave piano lessons. She continued her education and earned an MA in Counseling and Guidance from Missouri University.
Mildred traveled extensively around the world and was Chairman of the Washington University Travel Lecture Series. She has been a volunteer for the St. Louis Alzheimer’s Association since 1984, working on the Speaker’s Bureau and at health fairs. In 2004, she won the “Kathleen O’Brien Lifetime Achievement Award” in appreciation for her dedicated leadership in the Alzheimer’s Association. In 1994, she became a member of the Greenleaf Eliot Society at Washington University and established the “Richard and Mildred Poletsky Educational Fund,” which is awarded annually to a student researching Alzheimer’s Disease. To advance understanding of the brain, she participated in medical research and donated her brain to the Memory and Aging Project of Washington University Medical Center.
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 18, at Congregation Shaare Emeth, 11645 Ladue Rd. Visitation at 1:00 p.m., Service at 1:30, followed by prayer service at New Mt. Sinai Mausoleum, 8430 Gravois Rd in Affton.
