Melvyn Shaikewitz (1959–2018)

Melvyn “Mel” Shaikewitz, 59, of St. Louis passed away on Saturday, May 5, 2018 in the care of his friends and family. 

Mel was born on April 21, 1959 in Beaufort, South Carolina. In 1983, he married Molly Berger and together they had three children. He served as Mayor of the City of Olivette from 1998 to 2000 and proudly spent his career as an insurance broker. He cherished travelling with his kids and enjoyed a full and vibrant social life in the company of his beloved friends. A thoughtful, caring, and spirited man, he will be remembered for his contagious cheerfulness, unmatched sense of humor, and the absolute joy he found in life.

Mel is survived by his three children Caroline Shaikewitz, Emily Townsend (Brian Townsend), and Joseph Shaikewitz, and loving friends Drew Pottinger and Justin Sutton; granddaughter Finley Townsend; parents Don and Marilyn Shaikewitz; sister Susee Klekar; and nephew Marc Klekar and niece Jessica Risdon. 

Heartfelt thanks to the team of doctors and extraordinary nurses at St. Luke’s Hospital; Jay Howe and Jerome L. Howe, Inc.; and Felicia Flynn and the close friends who looked over him. Memorial donations in his memory can be made to the Human Rights Campaign.
