Louis Daniel (L.D.) Brodsky, died June 16, 2014 at age 73, surrounded by his family. He was born on April 17, 1941, in St. Louis, Missouri, to the late Saul (the late Charlotte Malter) Brodsky. L.D. grew up in St. Louis, where he attended St. Louis Country Day School. Besides his academic excellence, he was an all-around athlete, playing varsity football, varsity soccer, and varsity baseball, and serving as President of the Athletic Association, in his senior year. He earned a B.A. in Spanish, magna cum laude, at Yale University, in 1963, where he played freshman soccer and rowed crew all four years, earning the Major “Y” Award and Numerals. He went on to receive an M.A. in English, from Washington University, in 1967, and an M.A. in creative writing, from San Francisco State University, the following year. L.D.’s passion for writing poetry began in 1963, and over his career, he wrote close to 12,000 poems and authored eighty-three volumes of poetry, which garnered praise from Maya Angelou, Elie Wiesel, and many other notable authors. He also wrote twenty-five volumes of prose, including nine books of short fictions. In 1988, he founded Time Being Press (later Time Being Books), a publishing company specializing in poetry. His final endeavor was writing and publishing The Words of My Mouth and The Meditations of My Heart, in 2014, chronicling his year-plus-long journey living with brain cancer. In addition to his writing, L.D. was a leading William Faulkner expert, authoring nine books of scholarship on Faulkner and amassing, over a thirty-year period, one of the four largest collections of William Faulkner materials in the world. In 1988, he transferred ownership of his collection to Southeast Missouri State University and continued to serve as curator of the collection, developing it on behalf of the university. Though his writing and collecting brought him such joy, it was his daughter and son, who, he said, were his greatest accomplishments in life. L.D. was the devoted father of Trilogy (Anthony) Mattson and Louis Daniel “Troika” BrodskyIII (Elizabeth Potter); the loving brother of Barbara (David) Kantrovitz, Dale Brodsky (Robert Brooks), Roger Brodsky (Diane Kennedy), and Jeffrey (Katie) Brodsky; the adored grandfather of Tristan Alexander Mattson; the former husband and cherished friend of Janet Brodsky; the admired and esteemed colleague of Time Being Books editors Jerry Call and Sheri Vandermolen; and the dear friend of many, including Bisera Bander and Bertha Riley-Holt. A graveside service will be held at B’nai Amoona Cemetery, 930 North and South Rd., on Thursday, June 19, at 11:00 AM. The family will be greeting friends and relatives, from 3 – 6:00 p.m., at the Hilton St. Louis Frontenac hotel.
