Lipsitz served as past president of NCJW-St. Louis

Edith “Edie” Lipsitz, past president of the National Council of Jewish Women-St. Louis Section, and described as “a dedicated community volunteer,” died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008. She was 88 years old and a resident of St. Louis.
Mrs. Lipsitz was born in St. Louis on Nov. 15, 1920. She graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in 1942 from Bryn Mawr College.
Throughout her adult life, Mrs. Lipsitz was an active volunteer for numerous Jewish organizations. She was president of the St. Louis Section of NCJW from 1965-1967. She was also a past president of her Hadassah group, and was active with the Jewish Hospital Auxiliary, Miriam UOTS, Brandeis Women and was an active volunteer for the Jewish Community Center of St. Louis.
Mrs. Lipsitz was also active with the Jewish Federation of St. Louis. She served on the Federation’s Jewish Education Committee, which led to the establishment of the Central Agency for Jewish Education. She also served as vice chair of the Headliners of the Women’s Division for the Jewish Federation Annual Campaign.
Mrs. Lipsitz was also an active member of Temple Israel. She was a past vice president of the Temple Israel Sisterhood and a former member of the temple’s board of trustees.
Mrs. Lipsitz was married to Ellis Lipsitz, M.D. Other survivors include their children, David A. (Judy) Lipsitz; Judy (David) Capes; Thomas S. (Robyn) Lipsitz, and Suzy (Jim) Cornbleet. Another son was the late James E. Lipsitz. Mrs. Lipsitz was also the former mother-in-law of Lori Heise. She was the grandmother of Daniel (Crystal) and Emily Lipsitz, Adam (Rachelle), Betsy and Jodie Capes; Wendy (David) Berry, Julie and Jamie Lipsitz, Amy (Josh) Chatten and Molly Cornbleet and Sam Lipsitz. She was the great-grandmother of Abigail Lipsitz, Chloe and Alden Capes. She was the sister and sister-in-law of the late Kathryn (the late Al) Sloofman, and the late Al (Louise) Voorhaus and sister-in-law of Robert (Janice) Lipsitz and the late Abe (Marion) Lipsitz.
