Lee “Popie” Shapiro

We mourn the death of Lee “Popie” Shapiro, 87, who died peacefully early in the morning of July 1st, 2017. Beloved wife of Harvey Shapiro (deceased) and daughter of Otto and Frances Schimmel. Popie is survived by sons Kenny (Mary) Shapiro and David Shapiro, brothers Mutzi and Martin Schimmel, grandchildren Andrew, Max, Scott and Melissa, and proceeded in death by her parents and eldest son Mark Shapiro.

Popie lived for her love of her family and her love of cooking, and gardening. She was well known for her cooking and baking, and authored her own cookbook, After I’m Gone. Popie was a lifelong member of the Missouri Botanical Garden, and a fixture at the St. Louis symphony. She was also a volunteer and supporter at KWMU public radio. Popie loved playing weekly golf and bridge with her girlfriends and her husband Harvey. She loved hanging around the tennis court watching her family members play tennis, or supporting her sons and grandchildren in football and track.

A special thanks to Jackie Jones for all the support, love, and care she provided Popie and the family the past three years. And to the Parc Provence staff for providing a tremendous support network for Popie. And finally, to the families of other residents at Parc Provence collectively sharing support for family members.

Services will be held at CRC Congregation, 5020 Waterman Blvd. at 2:00 PM on July 14th. Donations can be made to the Missouri Botanical Garden or KWMU Public Radio
