Juanita Yawitz

Juanita (Marglous) Yawitz, died March 18, 2011. Beloved wife of Aubrey Yawitz; dear mother of Carol (Irl) Don, Joanne (Gabriel Farkas) Yawitz Godino of San Francisco, Richard (Alison Cannon) Yawitz and Nancy Yawitz of Chicago; dear grandmother of Laura Don, Michael Don, Kathryn Yawitz and Alysse Godino; dear sister of Ray Marglous and Sawyer (Jean) Marglous; dear sister-in-law of the late Bernard (the late Jean) Yawitz and the late Vivian (Byron) Gross; our dear aunt, cousin and friend. She was co-founder of Camp Pegnita in St. Louis. Yawitz was a 1940 graduate of Clayton High School and in 1944 received her B.S. degree in public administration from Washington University. She was instrumental in initiating the Sigma Delta Tau sorority at Washington University. As a social worker at the St. Louis County Mental Health Department for many years, one of her many responsibilities included working with troubled mothers who lived in poverty, bolstering their confidence and instilling self-respect. She was part of the public mental health battle against what was then called “Grid” (now Aids), was an active member of the Miriam Foundation and the National Council of Jewish Women and a longtime member of Temple Israel.
