John A. Blumenfeld

John A. Blumenfeld of Clayton, Missouri passed away on Tuesday April 9, 2019 at age 94 in St. Louis.
John was born on November 11, 1924 to Morris and Eva Blumenfeld in University City, Missouri. He attended University City High School and graduated in 1942. After serving in the Army state-side during World War II, he went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in 1946 and his JD degree in 1948, both from Washington University in St. Louis. He did graduate studies at Harvard Law School in 1949. His acceptance to the Bar came in 1948 and he was a member of the American Bar Association, The Missouri State Bar Association and the St. Louis County Bar Association. He was also a member of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri.
In 1950, He opened his own law practice in St. Louis and he practiced law for 63 years. His firm evolved into Blumenfeld, Kaplan and Sandweiss. He served as Senior Partner until he went Of-Counsel. After the firm was sold in 2007 to Stinson Morrison Hecker, John retired in April 2011. John’s practice areas included Real Estate, Land Use Development and Estate Planning. He was instrumental and most proud of the development of The City of Chesterfield and Lake St. Louis helping to establish their governing documents. He was listed in The Best Lawyers in America in Real Estate Law for 20 years and was elected as a charter member of ACREL – The American College of Real Estate Lawyers in 1979.
John was very involved in the metro St. Louis community. He was named citizen of the year by the City of Clayton, Missouri in the mid 70s for his work on merging the Clayton and Public Libraries. He served nine years as a Trustee of Maryville University and thereafter was named Trustee Emeritus. He served as an advisory director of Mark Twain Bank for 25 years. John has also served on the boards of various charities throughout the years and was an honorary member of the Weavers’ Guild of St. Louis.
John is survived by his five children, John Jr., Jane, Andrew, James and Emily, their spouses and 12 grandchildren, Diane, Amy, Dina, Marnina, Aliza, Jacob, Sam, Mark, Megan, Sean, Elias and Ethan and two great grandchildren, Westin and Nora. His wife Laura Schwab Blumenfeld, parents, Morris and Eva Blumenfeld, and his brother James Blumenfeld precede John in death.

Visitation Friday, April 12 at 10:00 a.m at the Mausoleum at New Mt. Sinai Cemetery, 8430 Gravois, Affton, MO 63123. A funeral service follows at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be private.
