Jean Cohen Manesberg

Jean Cohen Manesberg, October 25, 2017

Beloved wife of the late Maurice D. Manesberg (deceased March 18, 2000); wonderful mother and mother-in-law of Sally (Jerry) Flanzer of Burlingame, CA and Margy (Barry) Mitnick of Pittsburgh, PA; treasured grandmother of Matthew Flanzer, Douglas (Amy) Flanzer, Jennifer (Scott) Eckers, Jeffrey Mitnick and Michael Mitnick; dear great-grandmother of Jack Flanzer and Ben Flanzer; dear sister and sister-in-law of the late Ruth (the late Harold) Marglous, the late Joyce (the late Irwin “Chic”) Mohr and Phyllis (the late Al) Manesberg; dear aunt, cousin and friend to many.

Jean was a woman of many talents.  Growing up in St. Louis, as one of the “Central Hardware Kids,” Jean attended University City High School and went on to art school at Washington University.  During WWII she left art school to become a draftsman with a top secret clearance at Curtiss Wright, drawing specification diagrams for fitting new jet engine controls into the airplane cockpits being built by McDonnell-Douglas. Later, after she married “her Maishe” the love of her life, she turned those skills to calligraphy and returned to painting. She also was a terrific piano player, singer, and baker – as long as it was chocolate.  She did beautiful embroidery and quilting. Her Thanksgiving dinners and center pieces were worthy of a magazine photo shoot.  She was a great mother. She volunteered as a Room Mother, a Brownie Troop leader, she helped with homework, and was always available for whatever her family needed. She came into her prime as a grandmother. She would sew hundreds of name tags into camp clothes – by hand – a true labor of love; created exquisite baby quilts; would happily spend a day baking cinnamon rolls with her granddaughter; and listen with awe-filled smiles to her grandchildren’s songs and plays.  She loved and was loved and our memories of her will always be a blessing.
