Janet Monsey

Janet Monsey, died peacefully September 18, 2014.  She was 86.  Janet was born to the late Helen and Henry Cohn in New York, New York. She graduated from Mamaroneck High School and attended the University of Utah where she met Arthur Monsey, a young engineering student. She went on to receive her B.A. from Goucher College in Baltimore, MD. She married Arthur in 1950 and in 1956 moved to St. Louis where they raised their five children. Janet was very active in civic affairs. She served on the Olivette City Council from 1977-82 and was the first female mayor of Olivette in 1980. In 1983, Janet helped push through a referendum on a nuclear weapons freeze. She was then quoted in US News & World Report in an article on the Olivette pro-freeze vote, “For the next generation, you’d like to have a planet left.” She was a past member of numerous organizations including: Metropolitan Council, League of women Voters, Ladue District School Council and The Advisory Board of Care and Counseling. She was the Cofounder and President of Cancer Family Care, which later became a program of Jewish Family and Children’s Service. She was an organizing member of the Ladue High School Job Bureau and co-led a cub scout troop for 2 years. After raising children, Janet and Arthur could finally enjoy traveling the world. Some of her more memorable trips included Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Europe, England, Japan, The Caribbean, The Mediteranean, and Israel.  She especially enjoyed music cruises. Janet and Arthur were among the earliest members of Temple Emanuel. She had an active intellect throughout her life.  Janet enjoyed St. Louis Symphony Concerts, museums and took great pleasure from taking her grandchildren to The Zoo and Botanical Garden. She was a great reader and particularly loved mysteries.  She was a proud member of the Pioneers, researching and writing papers on various subjects.  She loved gardening, knitting, reading the New York Times and cooking up great desserts. She had many good friends. She is survived and missed by her five children Lynda Monsey (Robert Donoho), Michael Monsey (Renee Sevier) , Barbara Monsey, John Monsey (Cindy Monsey), Steven Monsey (Laura Swindlehurst), 11 grandchildren( Emily, Forrest, Aaron, Rachel, Sarah, Joshua, Jacob, Julia, Alexis, Hannah, Beau), her beloved sister Judith Israel (Jacob Israel), Niece Susan Blumberg (Andy Needle), and Nephew , David Blumberg (Marybeth). Burial is private at Mount Sinai. A public memorial service will be held on October 6, 2014 at 12:30 pm at Temple Emanuel 12166 Conway Rd Creve Coeur, Mo. Berger Memorial
