Irwin B. “Hefty” Hoffman

Irwin B. “Hefty” Hoffman, died June 7, 2012 at age 94. Born February 22, 1918. He died peacefully after 94 rewarding, meaningful and fruitful years. He was devoted to his wife of sixty-seven years, Suzanne Sobel Hoffman, who predeceased him in 2009. During their time together, they traveled the world and had a full life as active and generous members of the St. Louis community. Hefty bravely served in the U.S. Air Force as a First Lieutenant throughout World War II supporting General Patton across Europe in England, France and Germany. He returned home after the war and joined Gale-Sobel Company, a St. Louis clothing manufacturer. After 46 years of service, he retired from the company as its president and co-owner. Proud of his heritage, Hefty worked for the good of the community throughout his entire life. He was president of the Community Housing Association for the Elderly and the St. Louis Civic Ballet. He served on the U.S. Draft Board and the boards of the Jewish Center for the Aged, the Macabean Mens Club and Congregation Temple Israel. Hefty was most proud of his tenure as a board member of the Jewish Federation of St. Louis for 45 years, including two years as its Campaign Chairman. He was the honored recipient of the National B’nai B’rith Foundation Guardian of Menorah Award for this commitment to Jewish causes, and received numerous other awards and recognition for his public service. He was a dedicated friend to many and a loving and caring father to Lawrence Michael Hoffman, Lise Marie Reardon (Robert) of East Lyme, Connecticut and Nancy Jane Stolberg (William) of St. Louis. He took great pleasure in his grandchildren, Colleen Brooke Shay (Kevin), Kelly Elizabeth Reardon and Laura Marie Stolberg and his two great-grandchildren, Robert and Anne Shay. Hefty will be missed by all. The family is grateful for the kind and capable care provided by the staff at The Gatesworth and McKnight Place Extended Care in the last years of his life.
