MELVIN S. BARAD, died Feb. 24, 2010 at age 91. Mr. Barad was born in the Bronx, N.Y. and his family moved to St. Louis in 1937, where he graduated from Soldan High School the same year. He graduated from Washington University with a BSBA degree in 1941. Assigned to the Army Air Corp, he was selected for Air Force Officer Candidate School and was commissioned 1st Lt. in August, 1942. In December of that year, he landed in North Africa as part of the 15th Air Force during the African Campaign and moved on with the 15th to Italy. He served overseas for 3 years, achieving the rank of Major, and was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service. He earned seven campaign battle stars. After the war, with his father, Albert Barad, and brother Leonard, he started Barad Lingerie Co. They were in business for 45 years, specializing in sleep and loungewear. They were known for their innovative styling and junior lines, and for many firsts, such as the much copied babydoll nightgown featured in national fashion spreads and the shift named “the Binki,” which made the cover of Life Magazine. Mr. Barad served as president of the St. Louis Garment Manufacturers Association and was president of the AAMA Lingerie Council. A dedicated golfer, he served on the board of the American Seniors Golf Association and International Seniors Golf Association. Husband of Susan Funk for more than 67 years; father of Edward (Marlin Polaski) of Denver, Huntley (Tirzah Mutrow) of San Francisco, and Thomas (Jill Elikann) of Los Angeles; grandfather of six and great-grandfather of three.
