Daughter of the late Harry and Fannie Dunie; widow of Jerry Hofstein; mother of Mark (Ros), John (Donna), Lewis (Vicky) and the late Doug Hofstein; grandmother of Debbie, Jason (Erica), Jeremy, Daniel and Rebecca Hofstein; great-grandmother of Emily Spitzberg-Hofstein; sister of Shirley (Sis) Goldberg (Sam); aunt of Donna Shatz, Harriet Blickenstaff and Judy Goldberg; great-aunt of Lauren and Andrew Shatz, Jacob and Matthew Blickenstaff and Jennifer Goldberg. Owner of Dunie’s Delicatessen, the restaurant was started in 1912 by her father and uncle. After WWII, Johanna and Jerry took over the restaurant until 1964 when Jerry died. Located across the street from the former Globe Democrat and Post-Dispatch, the downtown deli was home to many reporters and editors until it closed in 1990.
