ESTHER LEWIN, died March 29, 2010 at the age of 91 in Tucson, Ariz.. Wife of Stanley Lewin; mother of Linda L. Stark of Missouri, Sherry L Sinclair and Reinhard Pawlicki; David A. Lewin and Barbara Wolfe of Dearborn; grandmother of Leonard and Beth Stark, Danielle and Jeff Gordman, Matthew Pawicki-Sinclair and Andrew Pawlicki-Sinclair; great-grandmother of Brennan, Lucy and Jamie Stark, and Harper and Zev Gordman; sister of Milton (Shirley) Berger, sister in law of Lawrence E. Padden and many nieces and nephews. She is the cherished daughter of the late Abraham and the late Bertha Berger; the beloved wife of her first husband the late Leonard L. Lewis, USNR, who was killed in action on June 6, 1944 (D-Day) at Omaha Beach, Normandy; the loving sister of the late Sylvia Berger, the late Harris Berger and the late Pearl Padden; dear sister-in-law of Shirley Berger and the dearest mother-in-law of the late Walter Stark. She worked full time for many years and retired from the Michigan Credit Union/League/League Life and was an active member of the Michigan Democratic Party. EMILY FREUND ULLMAN, died April 12, 2010 at the age of 84. Mother of Meg Ullman of St. Louis, Elizabeth Ullman of Denver, Paul Ullman (Donna) of New York City, and Anne Tolan (Joe) of Webster Groves; sister of Edith Binder of St. Louis and grandmother of four. She was a graduate of John Burroughs School and Vassar College and was a tireless and dedicated activist for St. Louis community issues and causes. Emily put her time and money where her heart was and convinced others to do the same. Her intelligence and drive were directed towards improving education for St. Louis students of all ages. She held leadership positions in many organizations devoted to improving and enriching education opportunities in St. Louis including the Scholarship Foundation, Springboard to Learning, CORO and the Conference on Education. Her curiosity and zest for new experiences led her to almost every continent, gathering friends and stories along the way. She modeled independence, strength of character and the courage of her convictions for her children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
