M. LOUIS BERNELL, died Dec. 3, 2009 in Houston, Texas. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1919, where he graduated from St. Louis Country Day School. He graduated in 1941 with a Bachelor of Science degree from Columbia University in New York, and then entered the U.S. Navy. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1946. Louis was a former Director of the Continental Bank of Houston and the Bank of Santa Fe as well as Chairman of a number of Texas country banks. Husband of Betty Ann Bernell for 65 years; father of Laurence Hill Bernell, Ronald Louis (Carolyn) Bernell and Lisa Bernell Rostad; uncle of Dr. Richard (Anne) Frachtman, Dr. Robert (Sherrie) Frachtman, and Michael (Norma) Frachtman; cousin of Liz (Nelson) Ziegler, and Fran (Ali) Ziegler; grandfather of Andrew, Ben, Michael and Phillip Bernell, Brent and Katie Bernell and Marcus and Laura Rostad. MARTIN L. FINKELSTEIN, 72, died Dec. 10, 2009 at the Jewish Home of Greater Harrisburg. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri on Feb. 3, 1937 to the late Bernice and Frank Finkelstein. Beloved husband of Barbara (Paster) Finkelstein for 51 years; father of Michael (Kelley) Finkelstein, Jill (Scott) Miller, both of Harrisburg; brother of Jerry Finkelstein of St. Louis; grandfather of Rachel and Marc Finkelstein and Cory and Valerie Miller. Marty served 8 years in the U.S. Naval Reserves. He was a volunteer at the Jewish Home for 17 years. In 2008, he was given the Helen Goldberg Volunteer Award by the Jewish Home. He had an illustrious career in the seafood industry. In May 1989, he was knighted by the Government of Iceland and received the Order of the Falcon, presented by the President of Iceland in recognition for his outstanding achievement selling Iceland fish in the world arena. MARVIN REISS, died Dec. 17, 2009 at the age of 91. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Evelyn Reiss; brother of Shirley (Larry) Hollander; father of A. Gerald “Jerry” (Barbara) Reiss of Hollywood, Fla., Mark (Ginney) Reiss of Golden, Colo. And Elaine (Craig) Wright of Scottsdale, Ariz.; grandfather of seven and great-grandfather of six.Reiss was a founding member of the Amigos, a St. Louis social and philanthropic organization formed in the 1940s. With his wife, Evelyn, he was founder and proprietor of The Gravois Bootery, a landmark shoe and boot retail store located for more than 43 years in south St. Louis. They were also longtime members of Congregation B’nai Amoona.
