ROSLYN BROIDA RAFEY, died Jan. 29, 2010 in Falls Church, Va. Mrs. Rafey was born November 26, 1922 in St. Louis to Max Broida, whose family were founders of Broida Brothers Jobbing Co. and Sigma Chemical Corporation, and to Jennie Cohen Broida, whose family founded the Central Hardware Department Store chain and the Glasco Electric Co. The third oldest of four sisters, she grew up on Pershing Avenue and attended Soldan High, graduating in 1939, after which she attended the University of Missouri. In 1941, she married Charles I. Sher. While her husband served on the European front during WWII, she worked for McDonnell Aircraft at Lambert Field. She re-married in 1960 to Dr. Ernest G. Rafey. Mrs. Rafey was a life member of both Hadassah and Brandeis. She is remembered for her tireless devotion to her family, her love of knitting, reading and gourmet cooking, her great facility at organization and her elegant sense of style and social grace. Beloved wife for nearly 50 years of Dr. Ernest G. Rafey; mother of Gail (Brendan) Collins of Emeryville, Calif., Larry Rafey of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., Beverly (the late Kenneth) Appel of Las Vegas, N.M., Richter (Laura) Rafey of Santa Clara, Calif.; grandmother of William (Will) Minot Rafey and Kelly Minot Rafey. Survived by her sisters Lillian (the late Theodore) Gitt of St. Louis and Jane (the late “Duck”) Drake of Santa Monica, Calif.
