Harry Salniker

Harry Salniker

Harry Salniker, born December 11, 1924, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2019.

He is survived by his children, Amy Theusch and Paul Salniker (Melanie); his grandchildren, Maya and Natasha; his nephews and nieces, Allen Levin (Joyce Gang), Carol Mode (Robert), Arlene Fishman, David Salniker (Terri Waller), Ava Chappell (Bruce), Don Salniker (Carol Carr) and Steve Salniker; and his stepchildren Lanie Kodner (Steve), Stanley Schuchat (Pam), Dorothy Schuchat and William Schuchat (Marjorie). Harry also leaves behind his previous wife, Beth Powell (Peter Griffin), with whom he maintained a fond relationship. His wife, Rosalind Schuchat Salniker; his parents, George and Dora; and his brothers and sister, Samuel, Max, and Rose, precede Harry in death.

Harry was born and grew up in University City. During WWII he fought with honor in the South Pacific and was awarded two Bronze Stars for his service in New Guinea and in the liberation of the Philippines. Harry later received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from Washington University and went on to be a buyer for Greenburg Mercantile and successor companies, remaining there until he retired in 1983.

Second to his family, Harry’s greatest loves were Cardinals baseball, classical guitar, tennis and golf. He was an avid reader and listened to thousands of audio books after losing his sight. He enjoyed talking politics and relished good conversation. He loved to laugh, and he had a zest for life that he brought to all he did, whether sightseeing overseas, a casual bike ride in Forest Park, or taking his children across town to see his siblings, nieces and nephews on weekends. Harry was a mensch—a man of character, dignity and a sense of what was right. He was a kind and gentle man, loved by his family and all who knew him.

Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on December 8 and will be in the Beit Midrash room, Arts & Education Building at the Jewish Community Center in Creve Coeur.
