Alan D. Greenberg, business executive and volunteer community leader, died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2007 at his home in Westwood after a long battle with cancer. He was 63.
Mr. Greenberg was born in St. Louis. He received a master’s degree in business administration from St. Louis University in 1968, and then joined his family business, Town-Carpet City, as a minority stockholder. The firm grew into one of the region’s largest floor covering dealers.
In 1983, Mr. Greenberg started his own business, Sun Carpet, which soon grew into a four-store chain. During this period, he developed plans for floor covering retailers throughout the country leveraging their buying power with mills and manufacturers and buying professionally produced national advertising.
In 1984, Mr. Greenberg joined with Howard Brodsky to lead 11,000 independent floor covering retailers to take part in the industry’s first “Billion Dollar Carpet Sale.” That venture led to the concept for Carpet One, now part of CCA Global Partners, which Mr. Greenberg and Brodsky co-founded. They developed and nurtured 18 companies with over 3,600 stores in the flooring, mortgage banking, lighting and bicycling industries. The companies in CCA Global Partners collectively employ thousands of people wordwide.
Brodsky was quoted in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch as saying of Mr. Greenberg, “For over 24 years, I was fortunate to have a best friend to share experiences with. Not only did we work closely together, but he was my dearest friend. It is rare in life for a person to live his dream, and Alan and I were able to live our dream together. Alan was a person of great integrity and warmth and was a true visionary.”
Mr. Greenberg was active in both the Jewish and general community, having served on the board of directors of the Jewish Center for Aged (now Cedars of the JCA). He was a former sheriff of Westwood and was a member of the Westwood Country Club Finance Committee.
Mr. Greenberg was an active leader in industry associations. He served as president and later chairman of the board of the Retail Floor Covering Institute. Throughout his career, Mr. Greenberg received many honors, including Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young in the wholesale distribution category for the St. Louis Region in 1999. In 2002, he was entered into the World Floor Covering Hall of Fame.
A funeral service was held last Thursday at Congregation Shaare Emeth, 11645 Ladue Road. Burial was private.
Among the survivors are his wife, Sharon Greenberg; a daughter, Darcy Glidewell of St. Louis; a son, Tod Greenberg of St. Louis, and a sister, Lois Siegel of St. Louis.
