George Urias

George Urias, died April 9, 2014 at age 85. He lived in Smith Mountain Lake, Va., and died of complications from ALS with his wife, Gloria Schmidt Urias, by his side. Born in Bakersfield, Ca., after attending Garfield High School East Los Angels, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. Stationed at Eglin Air Force Base in Pensacola, Fla., for four years. Returning to California, he pursued his post-secondary studies at the University of Southern California. During his career in the aerospace industry, George worked for a number of companies. At McDonnell Douglas he was Vice-President of Marketing and Microelectronics. He then went to work with the Israeli company, Tadiran/Ellissra for the next 19 years where he was the Director of Marketing of Communication of Warfare. George and his wife were very active in community affairs including the Kennedy Center, The Discovery Shop for the American Cancer Society and the American Red Cross Disaster Services, where they were deployed at the local, regional and national levels. George and Gloria met in St. Louis and were married in 1985 at Temple Israel. He is survived by his devoted wife, Gloria of 29 years, by his daughters Carole Urias and Lisa Urias Umbel,his Son, David Urias, his grandchildren Richard Umbel, Jr., Nitzannah Urias and Alexander Urias. George and Gloria were members of Temple Emanuel in Roanoke, VA.
