Frances Franklin

Frances Franklin, died April 7, 2011. Beloved widow of Harold Franklin, M.D.; dear mother of Sally (the late Richard) Zweig, Carol (Alex, M.D.) Evers, M.D., Amy (David) Pritikin and Jay (Cheri) Franklin; dear grandmother of Ethan (Jennifer) Zweig, Dara (Enrique V) Landa, Sam Evers, Jacob Evers, Joseph Evers, Alice (Barry) Steinglass and Seth Pritikin; dear great-grandmother of four; dear sister of Betty (Charles) Meyer and Doris (Gunther) Kohn; our dear aunt, cousin and friend. A graduate of Washington University in accounting and one of the first women to ever be hired by Price Waterhouse as an accountant, she went on to apply her organizational and leadership skills in a striking variety of ways. One of the founding forces behind establishment of the Reading is Fundamental program in St. Louis, she advanced her passion for the power of education for children in a very direct and impactful way. That same devotion to transforming peoples’ lives through education led to many decades of service with The Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis, as a volunteer, Board member, and President. Her avid interest in art inspired her to give her time and skills to educate and impassion others to join in that appreciation. Beginning in the 1960s, on the Board of Friends of the St. Louis Art Museum, and as a participant who rose to a term as leader of the docent program, she was able to enhance the level of arts education in St. Louis. Washington University’s establishment of the Lifelong Learning Institute was another opportunity to give time, skill, and direction to an educational initiative, this time for seniors. An active facilitator, leading and participating in courses in literature and art appreciation, she was elected President of that group. The National Council of Jewish Women and Hadassah as well gained from her lifelong membership. Her indomitable spirit shone after she was left a quadriplegic from an accident in 2001. Despite that, she never slowed down, keeping up a remarkable schedule of bridge games, book clubs, Lifelong Learning courses and most importantly, The Sewing Club, now in its 67th year of bi-weekly meetings. Funeral service Sunday, April 10th, 2:00 p.m. at the New Mt. Sinai Mausoleum, 8430 Gravois. Visitation after 1:30 p.m. Contributions to The Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis, 8215 Clayton Road, St. Louis, Mo. 63117. Please visit bergermemorialchapel.com for more information.
