Fay Katz Berwald, died April 15 at age 102 after a short illness at the vibrant age of 102. She was born December 17, 1911. Fay was the beloved wife of the late Dr. Irvin Israel Berwald. She was the daughter of the late Jacob and the late Rose Katz, of Lomza, Poland. She was the dedicated mother and mother-in-law of Dr. David (Gail) Berwald, Sonya (John) Scharf and Dr. Rose Ann (George Chism) Berwald. She was the devoted grandmother to Julie (Keith Fern) Berwald, Daniel (Jenny Wayland) Scharf, Dr. Bruce (Laurie) Berwald, Samuel Scharf, Lynne (Brad) Stein, Aaron Chism and Rebecca Chism. Fay also delighted in her great grandchildren: Rachel, Sara and Ariel Berwald, Benjamin and Isabel Fern, Max, Abbey and Jordan Stein, Simon, Leo and Violet Scharf. Fay was proud of her civic and religious community involvement. She served as President of the St Louis Chapter of Hadassah, earning the designation of life member, along with her daughters and granddaughters. She was also the former President of the St. Louis County Medical Society Auxiliary, supporting her husband as a physician. Fay took great joy in her membership in the St. Louis Yiddish Theatre and Chorus. She was extremely proud of becoming an American citizen. She came to St. Louis in 1938 with her husband to reestablish their life in the United States. Fay’s greatest pride and love revolved around her energetic, robust family. She enjoyed traveling with them and visiting all over the country for celebrations. She was the heartbeat of the extended group. Their devotion to her was unparalleled. Funeral service Friday, April 18th, 10:30 AM at Congregation B’nai Amoona , 324 S. Mason Road. Visitation Friday 10:00 AM. Interment Chesed Shel Emeth Cemetery-White Road.
