Esther Schermer Berger died peacefully at home on March 15, 2025, aged 97.
Esther led an eventful life full of important, loving and fiercely devoted relationships, none more so than her 72 year marriage to Ted, who passed away in 2020.
Born in 1927 into a tight-knit community, she obtained a BA from Washington University. Known for her great sense of style and passion for cooking, her abiding feature was her big personality and sharp sense of humor — matching the beautiful fiery red hair of her youth. Great grandchildren Hadley and Easton called her ‘our spicy, funny Bubbie.’
Esther loved entertaining and created a home that was the warm, central hub for family gatherings. She expressed her unwavering generosity and love for those closest to her through a constant supply of her delicious homemade treats.
With a mind that was sharp to the very end, Esther held definite and clearly articulated opinions on issues both at home and abroad. Her grasp of current affairs was astounding.
She loved the beautiful home and garden she and Ted shared with her daughter Emily and Kevin. Those living nearby brought joy and humor to her life every day.”
Esther is survived by 3 daughters, Debra Zar (Mark), Barbara Hay (George), Emily Becker (Kevin) 5 grandchildren (Jessica, Robby, Lauren, David, Eve) 2 bonus granddaughters ( Tara and Leah) and 8 great grandchildren (Sophia, James, Eloise, Asher, Everett, Hadley, Easton, Estelle).
