Dr. Steven Plax, 83, longtime pediatrician

BY ROBERT A. COHN, Editor-in-Chief Emeritus

Steven Plax, a pediatrician long admired for his devotion to his patients, family and friends, died suddenly on Sept. 4. He was 83 and a lifetime resident of greater St. Louis.

Steven Irl Plax was born in St. Louis on Sept. 1, 1935, the son of Charles and Jemmie Persik Plax. He grew up in University City and graduated from University City High School. He received his undergraduate degree at Washington University and his M.D. degree at the University of Missouri. His pediatric training was at the University of Rochester and St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Plax was married for 55 years to the former Julie Levy. They had four children: Danny (Alison Oswald) Plax; Katie (John Cross) Plax; Ted (Laurie Ann) Plax and Andy (Chelsea) Plax, and 11 grandchildren.

Dr. Plax worked as a pediatrician for 40 years, mostly at the Children’s Clinic. He established a playground for children of all abilities, the first of its kind in the St. Louis area, at Tillis Park. Dr. Plax also served patients at the University City East Clinic and often advocated for them when they needed follow up care. For years he interviewed potential Washington University medical students. He was known to memorize their applications and read the literature about their projects. Many of those he mentored participated with him in the Practice of Medicine course for doctors in training.

Dr. Plax was an avid golfer and enjoyed being with his family at dinners and on vacations. His children and grandchildren mentioned his loyal attendance at sporting events regardless of the weather. He was proud that two of his children and a daughter-in-law were in pediatrics.

A statement issued by Dr. Plax’s family said, “Steve was a longtime, beloved pediatrician to many. He was passionate about serving his community and helping those in need…His model of generosity, integrity and kindness will be greatly missed.”

That statement was reinforced and confirmed at a “Remembrance of Steve” celebration of his life, which filled the auditorium at John Burroughs School on Sept. 9. Family members and friends shared memories, anecdotes and tributes to Dr. Plax’s love for family and friends, his devotion to his profession and contributions to the community.

Memorial contributions preferred to the SPOT Youth Center, 4169 Laclede Ave., 63108.
