Dr. Karin Joy Blinder Gubin

Well-known psychologist and author Dr. Karin Joy Blinder Gubin, 53, died on October 28, 2014 at her home in Memphis, Tenn. Dr. Gubin was the wife of Dr. Steven Gubin, to whom she was married for 24 years. Her natural name said it all. She touched everyone with her warmth, charm, concern and strength, and derived her JOY by making the world a better place for others.

Dr. Gubin graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1983 and received her Ph.D. in psychology in 1991. She married her soul mate Steven in 1991 and moved to Memphis—becoming an immediate fixture in her new community — though her heart always belonged to St. Louis.

In addition to raising her three children whom she worshiped and adored, Dr. Gubin practiced clinical psychology, specializing in eating disorders, anti-bullying, family counseling, sports mental toughness, women and heart disease, and motivational speaking. Throughout her career she worked in private and public schools as a counselor/therapist, as well as in private practice. She made everyone—family, friends and patients — feel special and important, sacrificing her time and pleasure to help others with their problems.

Dr. Gubin authored three books and numerous articles in her areas of expertise. Her passion was bringing JOY to others, particularly during her original rap and videos performances, which always delivered a meaningful message mixed with her humorous, playful side supplemented by her hidden singing talent.

Born in St. Louis, on August 21, 1961, Karin was the daughter of Dr. Max and Carol Blinder. Besides her husband and parents, Dr. Gubin is survived by two daughters, Cassidy Gubin and Carly Gubin of Memphis; a son, Cody Gubin of Memphis; a twin brother, Dr. Kevin (Carol) Blinder; a sister, Robin (David) Chervitz; and 10 nephews and nieces.

She was a shinning star to all.
