Doris Jean “DJ” Bassin Serkes, 05/23/1927 – 06/05/2025
Adored wife of the late Alvin Serkes for 49 years; mother and mother-in-law of Jeff Serkes (SuEllen), Jody L Serkes (partner Peggy Ghertner).
A graduate of Hawthorn High School in East Saint Louis, then attended Washington University. She married Alvin Serkes. She was the Past President of the Women’s Variety Club of Saint Louis, a Member of Temple Israel, and SLICHA.
Above everything else, DJ enjoyed time spent with family and friends, whether at the family dinners and going out to parties and meet ups with friends. And as far as friends, she was a member of the “LongLasters” club. The women who are well into their 90s and some now not. Dottie “Doo” Levin, Audrey Schmidt, Lois Bender, Suzanne Lasky, Maxine Levy, Reva Ashkenazy. Her friends were far and wide.
She loved playing tennis and was good at it for a long time. Both of us blew our knees out at the same time one summer. Dancing and Frank Sinatra just a few of her loves. Gail Bassin Muskin her niece who left us was a constant for her. Cousins from everywhere, The Bassin’s, Levy’s.
Funeral service Sunday June 8th 10:30a.m. at BERGER MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 9430 Olive Blvd. Visitation Sunday 10am. Private family interment. A Celebration of DJ’s life will be held Sunday, 2-4 pm at 150 Carondelet Plaza, Club Room, First floor.
