David A. Young, age 80 of St. Louis, MO, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 16, 2025. David was born and raised in Leeds, West Yorkshire UK to Stanley and Myrtle Young. David is the beloved husband of Evelyn Young; dear father and father-in-law of Joshua Young (Carrie Elliott) and Benjamin Young; dear brother of Francis Guez (the late Paul Guez); dear brother-in-law of Gerard Mendel (the late Barbara Mendel); and dear uncle of Noa Guez-Tolila (Romain Tolila) and Edouard Mendel (Abbie Mendel). David is a beloved cousin and dear friend to many.
David received his formal education in law. Soon after arriving in the United States David combined his passion for history with his love of trolleys to become an expert on all aspects of the street railway systems in the UK and US. David was a professional archivist and published author. He placed special emphasis on the unique streetcar history of St. Louis. This expertise led David to publish dozens of acclaimed books on the history of streetcar operations in North America and the UK, and documented several corporate histories. David also held a role as the archivist for the Jewish Federation of St. Louis.
In the early 1970s David embarked on an incredible journey, driving over 3,000 miles from Yorkshire to Israel. His travels changed the course of his life when David met his future wife, Evelyn. After their wedding, held on top of Masada, they traveled to St. Louis to start their lives together. David and Evelyn lovingly raised their two sons, Joshua and Benjamin. David was delighted that Joshua and Benjamin shared his passion for photography, comedy, music, and travel.
David prioritized staying connected to his family overseas, creating a bridge between the two continents was paramount. David was an avid planner of many family trips to visit his beloved mother, sister, aunts, cousins, and friends. His efforts helped create close connections for his sons that remain firm to this day.
David will be missed most for his warmth, kindness, keen sense of (dry British) humor, and his voracious appetite for both learning new things and enjoying good food. He was the cook for his family and introduced his sons to the many varieties of cuisine the world has to offer.
David was a huge presence in the lives of everyone he came in contact with. His memory is truly a blessing to those that knew and loved him.
