Betty C. Rothschild, died June 5, 2013 at age 87, following a stroke. Mother of Mike Rothschild and Rita Rothschild (Stu Hoffman); grandmother, Nana, of Alina and Adam Hoffman. Betty’s husband, Al, died in 1967 and her only sibling, Marjorie, a few years later. Betty Claire Thomas was born and raised on farms in rural Mississippi. During high school, she worked at a furniture store which was owned by the small town’s only Jewish family. After graduation, she moved to Memphis, TN, and found work at the branch office of National Screen Service Corporation (the national distributor of all motion picture advertising, at the time), where she met Alfred Rothschild, an east coast Jew. Betty converted to Judaism, married Al and had her two children. NSS soon moved the family to New York, then Kansas City and St. Louis. Betty met her life’s challenges with consistent cheerfulness and ability, always putting others before herself. She had many wonderful friendships in many places, over the years. Luca’s home was always open to her children’s friends. Luca is the name affectionately used by Mike and Rita and their peers. Betty delighted in her grandchildren, loved them so very dearly and simply could not get enough of them.
