Alan Joel Broddon, September 28, 2018
Beloved husband of 60 years to Suzanne Goldstein Broddon. Adored father and father-in-law of Michele (Donn) Lux, Stephanie (Richard) Alport, and Jay (Renata) Broddon. Fun-loving grandfather of Philip and Andrew Lux, Jeremy Alport, and Alexandra Broddon. Dear son of the late Jacob and the late Mercedes Broddon. Beloved brother of the late Norman (Marcia) Broddon, Rochelle (the late Norman) Karty, and Linda Dwork. Beloved son-in-law of the late Dave and the late Bea Goldstein. Dear brother-in-law of the late Stanley (Nancy) Goldstein, the late Larry (Jill Sloan) Goldstein, and the late Sam (JoAnn) Goldstein. Our favorite uncle, cousin, friend, bridge player partner, and fishing buddy.
Alan attended Rankin Trade School and Washington University College business school and when he returned from his Armed Service during the Korean War, he joined his father and brother, Norman, at J. Broddon Sheet Metal Works,(HVAC and architectural sheet metal) the company his father founded in 1904. He and his brother ran the company together until Norman’s passing in the early ’90’s. He continued in business until 2005 when he closed the 101 year old firm saying, “It’s just not fun anymore without Norman”. At times they had as many as 50 men working for them. The evidence of their “fun together” is all over the St Louis area in homes, office buildings and shopping malls; from strip malls to Crestwood Plaza and the Galleria. They did “business on a hand shake” with customers, many of whom became lifelong friends.
He spent the next part of his life doing the things he loved, such as fishing, cut glass art work, fishing, building furniture and “robots” (think The Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz), fishing, playing bridge, (lots of bridge) fishing, enjoying his family and friends oh yes…..and fishing!
He loved the country and in the early 70’s, bought a place in Gerald Mo. It had an old farm house which he restored. He later moved on to another place, Woody Creek, in Warrenton Mo. where he fished, played bridge and entertained family and friends.
He sat on boards in the St. Louis community: MERS, Hillel, and Rainbow Village for whom he built or remodeled three homes, one of which got “verification gold level as a Green House”
Besides his family, he will be sorely missed by his fishing buddies and his Thursday afternoon men’s bridge group
