(JTA) — Warsaw residents, including representatives of the Jewish community, marked the 71st anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising.

The ceremony on Saturday was held at the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes in Warsaw, according to the Associated Press. During the ceremony, prayers were recited and wreaths were laid at the monument, the Jerusalem Post reported.

The some 200 participants in the memorial then marched to the Umschlagplatz square where Jews were rounded up by German troops for deportation to the Treblinka death camp.

Some 40,000 Jews were ordered into the ghetto in 1940. The uprising in 1942 lasted for about one month, during which about 7,000 Jews were shot by Nazi troops.
