Vienna rabbi attacked by soccer fan

(JTA) — A Vienna rabbi was verbally attacked with anti-Semitic insults by a soccer fan.

The fan shouted “Move, Jew – Jews out, Heil Hitler” and proffered the Nazi salute, according to reports. The incident occurred Aug. 30  in Vienna’s city center, ahead of the Europa League match between Rapid Vienna and the Greek team PAOK.

The attack on Rabbi Shlomo Hofmeister occurred in front of police. When the rabbi appealed to the police to intervene they reportedly said “Come on, it’s a football night.”

An Austrian law bans public support for the Nazis and Nazi ideology.

The rabbi reportedly said he would file a report with police.
