NEW YORK (JTA) — The University of California Student Association Board of Directors voted to investigate allegations of corruption waged against a Jewish student nominated to serve as a university regent.

Avi Oved, the student regent-designate nominee for the university system, allegedly promised to work to maintain an allegiance with Israel and the Jewish community at the University of California Los Angeles, and to fight against oppression from pro-Palestinian members of the student government, in an e-mail to philanthropist Adam Milstein. Oved received a large donation from the Adam and Gila Milstein Family Foundation for his candidacy for the UCLA Undergraduate Student Association, the Daily Californian reported.

The vote to investigate Oved came last week, according to the student newspaper’s Friday edition.

Students and board members have expressed concerns that Oved will be susceptible to influence from outside organizations. The emergency meeting to investigate the allegations will review concerns raised over conflicts of interest and funding transparency, student association member Kevin Sabo told the Daily Californian.

If nominated, Oved will join current student regent-designate Sadia Saifuddin, the first Muslim student representative on the board. Saifuddin’s appointment also was met with controversy for her stance on divestment from companies that do business with Israel in the West Bank. The two students, however, have been supportive of each other.

UCLA has handled similar charges in the recent past.

In May, the Undergraduate Students Association Council Judicial Board held a hearing to investigate two former members of the Undergraduate Students Association Council who had participated in a sponsored trip to Israel after some students from the organization Students for Justice in Palestine filed a complaint alleging conflict of interest.
