U.S. government employees restricted from Jerusalem’s Old City

JERUSALEM (JTA) — United States government employees have been restricted from entering the Old City of Jerusalem following an uptick of violence there.

The employees are restricted from entering the Old City between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. through Oct. 13 without prior approval from the U.S. Consulate in Jerusalem, the consulate general said in a security message emailed Tuesday to U.S. citizens in Israel. In addition, the employees are restricted from entering the West Bank for other than “mission-critical business” through the same date.

“We recommend that private U.S. citizens take into consideration these restrictions,” the message also said.

The message was sent following two stabbing attacks in the Old City that left two Jewish-Israeli men dead.
