Tamar Kollek, widow of longtime Jerusalem mayor, dies at 96

(JTA) — Tamar Schwartz Kollek, widow of Teddy Kollek, mayor of Jerusalem for almost 30 years, died at age 96.

Born in Vienna, she moved to Palestine in 1937 with her family. She met her husband and married him soon afterwards. They were among the founders of Kibbutz Ein Gev near the Sea of Galilee, and were married 70 years until his death in 2007. Teddy Kollek served as mayor of Jerusalem from 1965 to 1993.

Tamar Kollek was active in a range of organizations that aided disabled Israelis.

She will be buried next to her husband on Jerusalem’s Mt. Herzl, and is survived by a son, a daughter and five grandchildren.
