(JTA) — An Israeli solider hit with shrapnel while on leave died, bringing to 72 the total number of people killed on Israel’s side during the most recent Gaza War.

Sgt. Netanel Maman suffered a shrapnel wound to his head when a rocket fired from Gaza last week landed near a car he was in his hometown of Gan Yavne in Israel’s south.

He died Friday, according to multiple media reports.

Five others wounded in the explosion, including Maman’s brother, Tamir, were treated and released.

More than 2,000 Palestinians were killed in the Gaza war launched July 8 and ended this week with a long-term cease-fire agreement.
