(JTA) — The U.S. Senate confirmed the nomination of Democratic Party fundraiser Noah Mamet as the new U.S. Ambassador to Argentina.

The confirmation came despite criticism during the hearing that he has never visited the county to which he would be envoy.

The long-time Democratic Party fundraiser was approved for the post Tuesday by a vote of 50-43.

If he is not invited to meet Jewish leaders sooner, Mamet reportedly will be invited to the Buenos Aires Jewish center AMIA  in September, for the ceremony that has been organized since 2011 to remember the victims of the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center.

Born in 1971 in Manhattan Beach, Calif., Mamet earned a B.A. at the University of California at Los Angeles in 1992. He went on to work for the California Democratic Party and helped Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign in Santa Barbara County.

He founded Noah Mamet and Associates, a Los Angeles-based political consulting firm that today also has offices in San Francisco and New York. He also has been an adviser to the Wasserman Family Foundation in Los Angeles, which focuses on philanthropic causes including education reform.

In 2008, Mamet became a key player in President Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign, bundling more than $500,000 for the campaign.

He replaces former ambassador Vilma Martínez, who left the position 17 months ago.
