(JTA) — A rocket was fired from Gaza into southern Israel, but it was not clear where it landed or if anyone was injured.

The rocket set off sirens in Ashkelon shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday, but the Israel Defense Forces was unable to locate precisely where it fell, the Times of Israel reported. The IDF said the rocket probably fell short and landed on the Gaza side of the Israel-Gaza border.

Earlier in the week, Hamas officials warned that if Israel continues attacking its military positions in Gaza, the terrorist group might escalate the conflict, according to the Times of Israel.

Hamas has blamed other Islamic groups for the recent spate of rockets fired from Gaza, but Israel has said it holds Hamas, which governs Gaza, responsible for any aggression.
