JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israel Border Police officers opened fire on a Palestinian vehicle that they said was accelerating toward them during a raid on a weapons factory in a West Bank Palestinian town, killing a passenger.

The officers, who were involved in an operation in al-Ram, near Jerusalem, early Wednesday morning, said they shot at the car because they believed  their lives were in danger. The vehicle carried the green-and-white license plates issued by the Palestinian Authority.

Anwar al-Salaymeh, 22, was identified as the dead passenger by the Palestinian Maan news agency. The driver, Fares Khader al-Rishq, 20, was critically injured.

Another passenger, Muhammad Nassar, 20, was arrested and taken in for questioning by Israeli law enforcement, Maan reported.

The Israel Defense Forces said it is investigating the incident.
