Palestinian killed during Israeli raid of refugee camp

JERUSALEM (JTA) — A young Palestinian man was shot and killed after an Israeli army unit entered the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank to arrest a member of Islamic jihad.

Soldiers from the haredi battalion Netzah Yehuda entered the refugee camp on Tuesday night to arrest Basam a-Asadi, a senior Islamic Jihad terrorist. During a search of his home, hundreds of Jenin residents surrounded the area and, according to the Israel Defense Forces, shot live bullets and threw firebombs at the solders. The Palestinian Maan news agency said the refugee camp residents threw empty bottles and stones at the soldiers.

Majd Mohammad Anis Lahlouh, 22, was shot in the chest during the clashes and killed.

Two IDF soldiers were injured in the incident. Two Palestinian men also were injured.

The incident is under investigation, according to the IDF spokesman’s office.
