Palestinian killed after attacking Israel soldier, taking his rifle

JERUSALEM (JTA) — A Palestinian man was shot and killed after he attacked an Israeli soldier and tried to take his rifle at the Allenby border crossing with Jordan.

The Israel Defense Forces spokesman said Israeli military forces fired at the man after he attempted to seize the soldier’s weapon in Monday’s incident.

The man was identified as Raed Alaa Addin Zieter, 38, from Nablus in the West Bank, the Palestinian Maan news agency reported. According to Maan, he left the West Bank in 2011 and had not returned since.

He reportedly was part of a group of Palestinians who got off a on the Israeli side of the Allenby crossing for a security check. He yelled “Allahu Akhbar,” or God is great, as he ran toward the soldier, Ynet reported.

The border crossing between Jordan and the West Bank has been closed in the wake of the incident.
