BUENOS AIRES (JTA) — Members of the AMIA Buenos Aires Jewish Community Center elected an Orthodox bloc for its new leadership.
AMIA members went to the polls on Sunday to elect new leadership
The Orthodox groups of the United Religious Bloc won, with 6,194 votes, followed by the center-left Plural Community Action with 5,533 votes. AMIA is For Everyone headed by Buenos Aires City legislator Rabbi Sergio Bergman was third with 2,171. United Community took last place with 642 votes.
A record number of 14,587 AMIA members participated in the election, in polling places distributed across the city in Jewish sites such as schools, temples and social institutions.
AMIA holds elections every three years and presidents are limited to one term, so the current AMIA president Guillermo Borger will be replaced by another member of his Orthodox bloc.
“It was an important, truly civic day which shows the commitment of our members and also that the societal mass has greatly increased,” Borger told to JTA.
Using the results, an electoral assembly will be designed in proportion to the percentages of votes. This assembly will gather on May 23 to decide the 2013-2016 AMIA administration.
