New Yorkers celebrate Israel with parade, other events

JERUSALEM (JTA) — More than 30,000 New Yorkers and visitors turned out in New York City for the annual Celebrate Israel Parade.

Sunday’s event, previously called the Salute to Israel Parade,  was held under tighter security, in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombingsin March, according to New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly

The parade was dominated by the participation of Orthodox Jewish groups marching in and watching the parade, according to Haaretz.

Mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner walked the entire parade route and reportedly encountered a mixed reception from participants, many who jeered him for the Twitter scandal which led to his resignation from Congress. Other mayoral candidates marched at the beginning of the parade route looking to drum up Jewish support.

On Saturday night, the Empire State Building was lit up in blue and white in honor of the parade.

On Sunday night, Israel’s national soccer team beat Honduras’ national team 2-0 in a friendly match at Citi Field. It was the first time that Israel’s team has played in the United States in 35 years.
