New Yorker wins National Bible Contest

(JTA) — Shalhevet Schwartz of New York is the new champion of the National Bible Contest.

Schwartz, 14, a student at SAR High School in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, won her division May 6 at Yeshiva University in New York.

In all, 115 students competed in Hebrew and English in a bid to represent the United States at the international contest in Jerusalem next year on Israel Independence Day. The event was sponsored by the Jewish Agency for Israel.

The other national champions who will represent the United States at the international conference are Yishai Eisenberg of Passaic, N.J., a student of YBH of Passaic-Hillel; home-schooled teen Joshua Silvera of Los Angeles, affiliated with Congregation Mogen David in his city; and Allison Cohen of Shaker Heights, Ohio, affiliated with Congregation Bnai Jeshurun in Pepper Pike, Ohio, a Conservative synagogue.
