New visa for Filipina caregiver allows her to work in Israel as singer

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Rose Fostanes, the Filipina caregiver who won Israel’s “X Factor,” will be allowed to work in Israel as a performer.
Fostanes had faced difficulties after it was revealed that her work visa was only valid for work as a caregiver.
On Monday, Israeli Interior Minister Gideon Sa’ar interceded on Fostanes’ behalf, ordering the Population and Immigration Authority to issue her an artists’ visa, which will allow her to be employed as a singer, but also require her to stop working as a caregiver for her employer of the last five years. The authority had also offered Fostanes the option of a visa under which she would still work as a caregiver, but be allowed to sing on the side. She chose the artists’ visa, Ynet first reported.
The family that employs Fostanes had to agree to the change in the visa status.
Fostanes has been working as a caregiver in Tel Aviv for the past six years and lives in a small apartment in Tel Aviv with seven other Filipinos. She has been working abroad in order to send money to her family and partner since she was 23, and worked in both Egypt and Lebanon before coming to Israel. She has not been home to see her family in two years.
Fostanes belted out the Frank Sinatra standard “My Way” accompanied by the Raanana Symphonette Orchestra to beat out two individual contestants and a boy band in last week’s X-Factor finals. Part of her winnings includes professional representation and the opportunity to record an album with an Israeli record label.
At least 20,000 Filipinos work in Israel, most as caregivers.
