Netanyahu to undergo hernia surgery

(JTA) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will undergo hernia surgery on Saturday night.

After Netanyahu felt pain on Saturday, his personal physician, Tzvi Berkowitz, along with cardiology expert Aryeh Dorset, diagnosed that the prime minister had an umbilical hernia, according to an announcement on the prime minister’s Facebook page. A subsequent CT scan confirmed the diagnosis.

The procedure is expected to take an hour. Netanyahu is expected to receive local anesthesia, but may receive general anesthesia if needed. The surgery will take place at Hadassah Medical Center in Ein Kerem, Jerusalem, and will be performed by Dorset and Aviram Nissan, who directs the hospital’s surgical division.

Netanyahu is expected to be released from the hospital on Sunday afternoon.
