JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent a personal letter to the new Egyptian president urging him to keep Israeli-Egyptian peace intact.

In the letter, sent last week, Netanyahu praised the recent Egyptian elections. He wrote that “the peace treaty is in the interest of both countries and contributes to regional stability,” according to Maariv and the Times of Israel.

Morsi, who was sworn in on Saturday, said that as president he will honor all of Egypt’s international treaties. During the same speech, he said that Egypt will “stand with the Palestinian people until they regain all their legitimate rights,” according to the Times of Israel.
