Netanyahu hernia surgery successful

(JTA) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu underwent successful hernia surgery on Saturday night.

After Netanyahu felt pain on Saturday, his personal physician Tzvi Berkowitz, along with cardiology expert Aryeh Dorset, diagnosed that the prime minister had an umbilical hernia, according to an announcement on the prime minister’s Facebook page. A subsequent CT scan confirmed the diagnosis.

The procedure took about an hour. Netanyahu received general anesthesia, and Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon served as acting prime minister during the surgery. The surgery took place at Hadassah Medical Center in Ein Kerem, Jerusalem, and was performed by Dorset and Aviram Nissan, who directs the hospital’s surgical division.

Netanyahu is expected to be released from the hospital on Sunday afternoon.
